the evolution of the flying squirrel
You may be wondering why we think the flying squirrel will look like this in the future. Well the original species didn't really have "wings" they had flaps of skin that they used to glide for long distances. However, this new species can fly like a bird. The reason we predict they will look this way is because in the future, with the growing need for trees, their habitats soon were destroyed, leaving them to face predators and an entire ocean separating them from the next species. But natural selection decided to help this species. Over the course of thousands of years, they started to grow bat-like wings growing bones in their wings to help them fly. 200,000 years later that species of flying squirrel soar through the night sky safe from their predators. The two kinds of species still thrive, yet cannot breed, they are the southern flying squirrels, which are the ones you know now, and the northern species which has developed the ability to fly.
